Am I Obese or Simply Overweight?
You are putting on weight and you know that you are heavier and fatter than you ought to be and you desperately want to lose weight.

The formula to determine whether or not you are obese is fairly straight forward and is written as follows:
BMI= your weight kilograms / (your height in metres x your height in metres)
To show an example of this if a man (or woman) is 1.8 metres tall and their weight is 110 kilos the BMI calculation would be: 110/(1.8 x 1.8) ie. 110 divided by 3.24 which would give a BMI of 33.95 This would mean that the individual in question is in fact deemed to be obese.
In order to be considered to be normal weight your BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9
If we say for arguments sake that the individual above wants to get his BMI down to 23 the calculation to decide how much weight he needs to lose would be as follows:
(your height in metres x your height in metres) x your target BMI = your correct weight
ie.(1.8 x 1.8) x 23 = 74.52 kilos
The amount of weight you need to lose is therefore 110 (your starting weight) minus 74.52 (your correct weight) which equals 35.48 kilos.
As stated above your normal BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9. If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered to be overweight and if your BMI is below 18.5 you are generally accepted as being under weight.
Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death in the western world and is a growing problem. It is in your own best interests to reduce your weight to at least something approaching your correct BMI as your life could quite literally depend upon it.
